In Memoriam
On my walk, next to the bench that looks south to the ocean,
under a flat stone among the paving put there by passers by,
was a note
and a letter,
folded together.
I picked them up and opened the note.

In neat penmanship it explained
to the intended recipient who had died, that the writer had wanted but
never written the letter.

There's another memorial on my walk.
"RIP Baby Max" it says on the base stone.
On this passers by have placed other stones
but the inscription remains visible.
The inscription is in black felt tip pen and when it fades
someone renews it, sometimes me.

I didn't read the letter; just folded the note back into it
and put it back under the stone, but I thought I'd tell you about it,

and tell you that I love you.
